Quonset hut kits are becoming more and more popular with the DIY crowd; they can be erected quickly and provide a structured, long lasting solution for a variety of needs. Quonset steel buildings were originally developed as a sturdy answer to extreme weather conditions, and are manufactured in three styles:
-
The "P" Model is the style most commonly seen in use as a garage, workshop or storage building. It's straight walls and pitched roof present a more traditional look than other Quonset huts.
-
The "S" Model has a domed roof with straight sidewalls. This is a stronger design than the "P" model, and an excellent choice for use as a barn or workshop in areas with heavy wind and snow.
-
The "Q" Model represents the traditional "Quonset Hut". It is a complete half sphere, and is ideal for storing grain or hay. This is a popular choice for instances where side clearance is not an issue, and is the style most commonly seen in military installations.

Quonset hut steel buildings have many benefits, including:
-
One stop shopping. Quonset hut kits contain everything you need to build your own structure, except for the footing. Quonset huts may be installed over an existing foundation using bolts or by forming a U shaped concrete channel as a footer. They may also be erected on top of concrete or wooden side walls. There is no need to pour a slab foundation.
-
Wide open space. Structures built from Quonset hut kits have no interior structural supports, providing a clear-span interior for maximum usable space. The floor plan is unobstructed, allowing for the storage of any item without having to worry about fitting it around poles.
-
Long life expectancy. Quonset huts are made from galvanized steel that is rust and corrosion resistant. The structural integrity is extreme and designed to stand up against wind, snow and hail. The surface can be painted for additional protection against the elements, but this is not mandatory.
-
Fire resistance. Quonset steel buildings stand up well to fire, and can even contain an interior blaze and keep it from spreading. It takes a lot to permanently damage a quonset hut; though blackened, many weather flames well enough to provide additional years of service.
-
Convenience. Owners can install insulation, ventilation, air conditioning or heating, electricity and even partitions to make a comfortable office or warehouse. Quonset hut steel buildings can be used as a sturdy, weather resistant alternative for a storage unit, a livestock barn or a hunting cabin.
-
Speed and ease of construction. Four people can easily assemble a Quonset hut kit in a matter of days; the tools required are fairly basic; and the prep work needed is not extensive. Once assembled, maintenance is minimal.
