There are many factors to consider when figuring the cost of any building. You will need to account for material costs, labor costs and determine the location, foundation and finish.
For a 20 foot x 40 foot garage, you have a total square footage of 800 feet. For a prefab steel garage the materials will start at $5 per square foot or approx. $4,000 total cost Add a charge for delivery, which will depend on where you are located. Then you will need to consider the foundation of the garage, which can cost anywhere from $4 to $8 per square foot. Also consider the need for insulation, finishes and labor to construct. The average steel garage that takes all of these things into consideration will cost between $16 and $20 per square foot – or between $12,800 and $16,000 for our 20x40 foot (800 square foot) garage.
Building on an existing foundation (such as a poured driveway or pad) and assembling the structure yourself can significantly reduce those costs.
In contrast, a wooden framed, traditionally finished garage will cost approximately $45 per square foot for materials and labor. This means that our 20 foot x 40 foot garage would cost $36,000 to build – $20,000 more than completing the project using a sturdy steel building.
