A prefabricated steel barn is less expensive than a barn made from other materials. Steel barns are a practical alternative to more expensive barns (i.e. stick built and pole barns) and can be constructed in a fraction of the time. They provide a comfortable and secure shelter for animals and equipment. In addition to costing less to construct, a steel barn is more durable and requires less maintenance than a wood or masonry barn.
The architectural design of a steel barn will influence the cost. Traditional barns with straight walls are very popular, but a design that uses arched walls generally costs 30% less. Arched (or Quonset Hut) designs are also stronger and more resistant to damage from hurricanes and earthquakes. However, even steels barns with straight walls are stronger and safer than barns made of other materials; they are also cheaper to maintain, insure and can be classed as fire-proof!
The cost of building a steel barn will vary according to the location and the features of the horse barn. In general, the base cost of a straight wall steel barn is between $7 and $22 per square foot. The cost per square foot drops as the size of the barn increases. For a Quonset barn, the base cost is between $5 and $15 per square foot. Accessories add approximately 20% to the cost of either a straight wall or arched barn.
