The Best Green Energy Events in 2012

Throughout 2012, more cost-effective and efficient methods of generating green energy for homes and buildings once again will be on the minds of hundreds of visitors and exhibitors of the 10 best green energy events, which include leading green energy trade shows like the Expo Solar in February, the Solarexpo in May and the Solar Power International in September. The integration of a number of "intelligent" appliances that can save energy, as well as the smart grid, are also destined to be a part of the agenda at these events, including the International Smart Grid Expo in February, as well as the Electronic House Expo in March.

1. Expo Solar

A business to business exhibition, Expo Solar covers just about all aspects of solar energy -- from the storage of energy, the capture of energy and how the cells are manufactured. Over 350 different exhibitors from throughout the entire world showcased their latest solar technology in 2011 to well over 50,000 Expo Solar visitors, and such figures are only expected to increase for the 2012 show. This exhibition is considered to be among the largest of dedicated showcases for renewable energy of the year and, as far as the number of visitors is concerned, it largely overshadows the September convention of Solar Power International in the United States.

2. 23rd BioFach & Vivaness

  • Location: Nuremberg, Germany

The largest and oldest trade fair that is decided to organic products, BioFach is extending its focus on food products to holistic health and wellness in the year 2012 by way of a partnership with the Vivaness event. India will be featured in this as the country of the year, and a number of global organic produce suppliers will flock to BioFach so that they may exhibit their products. This convention is larger in both size and scope than the other comparable European trade fairs for natural ingredients, which are Natural Ingredients Expo and Food Ingredients Europe and are head in France at the end of November. 3. 2nd International Smart Grid Expo

Held along with Japan Renewable Energy Week, the second International Smart Grid Expo is a worldwide conference and exhibition that covers a host of different services and technologies that are -- as the name suggests -- in direct relation to the smart grid. This expo runs concurrently with numerous minor shows for renewable energy technologies, as well as with the International Smart Grid Expo technical conference. The previous year met over 90,000 visitors and 1,500 exhibitors across 57 different countries. Far larger than the Distributech (The Leading Annual Smart Grid Event) of the United States, this is one of the few conferences and exhibitions which are solely decided to smart grid technology.

4. 2nd San Francisco Green Film Festival

  • Date: March 1 to 7
  • Venue: Various venues
  • San Francisco, CA, United States

Following from the focus of the 2011 even, the second edition of the San Francisco Green Film Festival will feature over 70 movies that explore issues with sustainability and the environment from global filmmakers. The event from the previous year included a number of contributions from renowned artists, a list that included writer Margaret Atwood and filmmaker Werner Herzog. This film festival is actually similar to the Green Film Festival held in the United Kingdom, which also held its first event last year, featuring screenings of a number of key films like The Age of Stupid while the United Kingdom premieres Planeat and other new works.

5. Electronic House Expo

  • Venue: Orange County Convention Center
  • Location: Orlando, FL, United States

Known more simply as EHX, the Electronic House Expo is a convention designed for individuals who are interested in custom electronics, digital media, electronic security, smart energy and home health technology, featuring booths for over 200 exhibitors. The expo also offers hands-on sessions for individuals who are interested in getting more involved with the electronics industry. In 2012, the Electronic House Expo will also feature the New Opportunities Pavilion, a group dedicated to numerous sectors of smart energy management and connected living, as well as remote diagnostics and home health technology. Though this event is not used in the same sense as the CES, for example, is in the sense of launching products, it still serves as a good insight into the future of technologies for home appliances and the smart grid.

6. 5th Earth Hour

Organized by the environmental group WWF, Earth Hour is designed to globally raise awareness of the change in climate by having businesses and individuals throughout the world turn off their lights for only sixty minutes. This movement originated in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and 2008 saw the idea spread across the world. Today, somewhere around 128 countries now participate in Earth Hour, and many iconic landmarks like Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Empire State Building in New York also participating by dimming their lights.

7. 61st Hannover Messe

  • Date: April 23 to 27
  • Venue: Hanover Fairground
  • Location: Hanover, Germany

The largest industrial fair in the world, the Hannover Messe is home to a number of the latest innovations in the industrial technology world. The event itself is actually made up of numerous different trade fairs, and each one has its own primary focus on industrial technology areas. In 2012, the "energy" sector of the Hannover Messe will offer some of the newest technologies that are energy efficient, as well as a few concepts on interconnected smart cities. This year's partner with the Green Intelligence theme is China, and over 4,500 innovations will be presented in this event, which eclipses just about all other renewable energy trade shows.

8. 13th Solarexpo

  • Venue: Verona Exhibition Center
  • Location: Verona, Italy

In 2012, Solarexpo intends to focus on the trends within the field of renewable energy, which includes PV cell architecture and manufacturing. Despite its name, Solarexpo features a number of exhibitors from a number of different renewable energy systems, including hydrogen, alternative vehicles and wind power. The event welcomes over 1,000 exhibitors come over 40 different European and non European countries, and it also welcomes nearly 70,000 visitors. In terms of the number of visitors, as well as the name, Solarexpo is quite similar to Expo Solar of February, though it has a much more broad focus.

9. World Environment Day

Commonly abbreviated as WED, World Environment Day is a worldwide celebration of positive pro-environmental actions. The event, promoted by the United Nations, started out in 1982 and quickly became one of the primary ways in which the organization draws its awareness to numerous environmental issues throughout the world. The theme for the 2012 event has recently been announced to be Green Economy, and it comes shortly after Earth Hour in March.

10. 21st Intersolar

  • Date: June 11 to 14
  • Venue: Munich Trade Fair Centre
  • Location: Munich, Germany

Since its 1991 opening, Intersolar has quickly become one of the largest solar energy expos of the year, with nearly 2,000 exhibitors and over 72,000 guests from 43 different countries. It functions as a showcase for the latest and greatest products in the photovoltaic and solar markets globally.
